چکیده
Four functions characterize the melanocyte: the synthesis of melanin granules; the growth and maintenance of dendrites; the translocation of melanin granules within the cytoplasm in response to hormones or neurotransmitters; the transfer of melanin granules to adjacent cells that have phagocytic capacities. The melanocyte of the amphibian epidermis exhibits all of these functions and thus is ideal for study. Other melanocytes may express one or the other of these functions less apparently. The mammalian epidermal melanocyte, for example, does not translocate melanin granules so rapidly; the dermal melanocyte does not transfer melanin granules; the albino melanocyte synthesizes little or no melanin; some melanoma cells do not form dendrites. The melanoma cell, on the other hand, after transplantation or growth in cell culture, has an additional capability that it shares with certain other tumor cells: it synthesizes particles that are assumed to be RNA tumor viruses. In this report we will correlate the functions of the vertebrate melanocyte with its appearance by transmission electron microscopy. Unless specifically indicated, all electron micrographs shown are of cells fixed at room temperature in a solution consisting of 3% glutaraldehyde, 0.1 M sodium cacodylate buffer (pH 7.2), and 0.1% calcium chloride. The cells were refixed in 1% buffered osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in ethanol, and embedded in Epon 812 or, especially in the case of frog skin, in the less viscous epoxy mixture of Spurr (1). Thin sections were cut on an LKB Ultrotome III equipped with a diamond knife. They were counter-stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate and examined in a Hitachi HU-1 lB electron microscope.

Hormonal control of melanocytes: MSH-sensitive adenyl cyclase in the Cloudman melanoma.
Cyclic AMP occupies a position of central importance in hormone biochemistry (1, 2). Of especial interest is its possible function in mediating hormone regulation of pigment cell metabolism. It is known to affect cell membrane properties producing changes in sodium transport (3), water permeability (4), and hormone release (5), the last process having some analogies to melanosome dispersion in ...
متن کاملCytochalasin B and Pigment Granule Translocation
The redistribution of melanin granules within dermal and epidermal melanocytes of the frog is responsible for changes in skin color . Surviving frog skin can be lightened and darkened by many different compounds (I). When the granules are dispersed into the branched processes of individual melanocytes, the skin appears dark . When melanin granules are aggregated in the perikaryon, the melanocyt...
متن کاملIsolation of Herpetosiphon giganteus and Ultrastructure Analysis by Electron Microscopy
Herpetosiphon giganteus is a filamentous gliding bacterium. Gliding motility is the movement of the cells over surfaces without the aid of flagella. The mechanism responsible for bacterial gliding motility has not been known and there are only a few data on Herpetosiphon giganteus. The aim of this study was to observe the ultrastructure and negative staining of isolated strains of Herpetosiphon...
متن کاملEvaluation of chitosan gel on burn wound healing and keratinocytes function
Skin burns are common skin injuries that can result from exposure to various sources of heat by which, depending on the cause, different degrees of burns are generated. In restoration of superficial burns by re-epithelialization, the skin is rebuilt, but the skin color is different than the healthy tissue. Keratinocytes represent the major cells of the epidermis. These cells are sourced from ec...
متن کاملEffects of Nandrolone Decanoate on Ultrastructure of Testis in Male Adult Rats
Background: To improve the athletic ability and muscle mass, anabolic androgenic steroids are abused by athletes. Little is known about how these compounds affect the fine structures of the testis. This study aimed to identify the changes in the fine structure of testis following administration of nandrolone decanoate. Methods: Twenty five Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two expe...
